Reading Scripture with Curiosity and Care

“Unclobber” Book Study Begins January 2026

Many people carry questions about faith that don’t fit neatly into easy answers. Questions about Scripture, interpretation, and how belief connects with real lives often surface quietly, shaped by personal relationships, experiences, and prayer. For some, those questions feel uncomfortable to voice. For others, they become an invitation to look more closely, to listen more carefully, and to trust that faith can hold complexity.

Beginning January 14, Lutheran Church of the Resurrection will offer a Wednesday evening book study on Unclobber: Rethinking Our Misuse of the Bible on Homosexuality by Colby Martin. Meeting Wednesdays from 6–7 pm, the study creates space for thoughtful conversation around biblical passages that have long been debated, and invites participants to engage Scripture with both honesty and humility.

Rather than arguing for quick conclusions, Unclobber encourages readers to explore how Scripture has been read, how those interpretations developed, and how faith continues to grow through faithful reflection.

During a recent staff conversation, Sigrid shared why this approach resonates so deeply with her.

She described being drawn to the ELCA because it openly names its commitment to being welcoming and affirming while remaining rooted in Scripture. Reflecting on Martin’s work, she noted the tension many Christians feel when what they have been taught does not fully align with what their hearts recognize in the lives of people they love. Unclobber offers a way to hold that tension faithfully, inviting heart and mind to move toward greater understanding together.

This study is intentionally invitational. It is for those who feel confident in their views, those who are uncertain, and those who simply want to listen and learn in a respectful setting. Participants will also have the opportunity to engage further when Colby Martin joins Resurrection on March 7 to lead a workshop based on the book, offering deeper insight and guided discussion.

All are welcome to join this journey of reading, reflection, and conversation as we seek to grow in faith, understanding, and grace together.
